Greg Kats

Managing Director

Mr. Kats is the founder and CEO of Capital E, a leading energy efficiency advisor to innovative companies, cities, banks, and governments working to accelerate the transition to a low carbon economy. Capital E is also an investment advisor and early stage investor in low carbon and clean energy companies.

From 2006-2010 Mr. Kats served as Managing Director for Good Energies, a leading global Clean Energy investor.  Founded in 2001, by 2007 Good Energies was investing $400 million yearly in clean energy firms and helped build some of the most advanced clean tech companies in the world. With former Good Energies partner Michael Ware, Mr. Kats oversaw much of the company's North American portfolio including investments in wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, and energy efficiency.

Earlier, Mr. Kats served for five years as the Director of Financing for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at the US Department of Energy.  From 2011 to 2016, Mr. Kats served as a Principal in a $30 million clean energy project finance fund, and continues to invest, with several recent IPOs and M&A exits.  He is the author of Greening Our Built World and chaired the congressionally created Board guiding the greening of 430,000 federal buildings.

Greg was a founder of the country’s first green bank and served on a National Academy of Sciences Committee on national competitiveness. Greg played a substantial role in designing and developing LEED, the global green building standard, and received the first US Green Building Council Lifetime Achievement Award.  Greg served as consultant to the World Bank, guiding development of a new, global green building design standard. In 2019 he founded the Smart Surface Coalition, accelerating city investment in low-carbon resilience, with 40 partners such as the AIA, the National League of Cities and the American Planning Association.

Greg was the Founding Chairman of IPMVP and built it into the global energy and water efficiency design and verification standard for $50 billion in building upgrades. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Alliance to Save Energy for this and other work that expanded the energy efficiency industry.

Greg serves/has served on the boards of a dozen clean energy companies, earned an MBA from Stanford University and is a Certified Energy Manager. Solar PV powers his family home and electric car.
